Global Pass train reservation help

I am travelling from the United States with my three daughters. We have four Eurail Global passes 10 days within 2 months, 1st class.

Our plane lands in Madrid on 4 July 2026 in the morning. The first leg of our train journey will be that day. We need to ride the train to Barcelona in the early afternoon. I am logged in to the Eurail website and when I request 4 travellers for  1:00pm it shows me a 13:42 departure “Pass not valid”, a 14:42 departure “Seat reservations required from $56.80”. This is the same price it showed before I logged in. Why is the Global pass not working? and If this is the accurate price, what good is the Global Pass?

Eurail passes allow travel on the majority of trains in Europe but there are some operators that are excluded, the 13.42 is one of these.

While most trains are free to use without any additional payment some trains have compulsory reservations with a fee for the reservation. High speed trains in Spain, France and Italy are reservation compulsory with fees starting from €10 per seat.

If you want to compare to the standard ticket cost without a Eurail pass you can go to the operator websites such as https://www.renfe.com/es/en

The Eurail site and app only shows passholder reservation prices.

A good place to compare prices with and without a pass is Rail Europe. I would recommend paying in Euros (they charge a hefty conversion fee for other currencies). You can specify a Eurail pass in the search box.

Here are prices for 1 person. The cash price (without a pass) is €88 - €154. The cost of a seat reservation, with the pass, is €10 - €13.

(There’s a sight quirk with Rail Europe. It will show you second class reservations if they're cheaper, so click on the ‘Upgrade’ button to make sure you're in first class for a few € more)
