Hi all,

I’m planning a trip to Spain next month, and I’m still trying to understand how to navigate the Spanish train system, the apps, and the process.

So far, I’ve booked my Eurail Pass for Spain, and I’ve also made my seat reservations through Rail Europe. At the moment, I’m using two apps:

  • Rail Planner App – which shows my Eurail Pass ticket/QR code for it
  • Rail Europe App – which shows my seat reservation ticket / QR code for it

At the station, do I need to present both of these tickets? Please correct me if I’m wrong.I’m still trying to understand how the whole train journey flow works.

Yes, you need to present both, your ticket/pass (= QR code from the Rail Planner app) and your reservation (=PDF from Rail Europe) at the station before boarding.

Staff is usually way more interested in your reservation. Sometimes, they ignored my pass completely. But a few times, they required both.

If you like, you are also able to load your seat reservation into the Renfe app. Then you get notifications about possible delays etc.

In a few dozen Renfe journeys with mandatory reservations, only once (!) they were interested in my pass. This was on a train when the ticket inspector had a trainee with him and wanted to explain how Interrail worked. Other than that, Renfe staff are happy with anything that makes their scanner go "beep” (a reservation or a regular ticket).
