I'm sorry but the rule is not so clear to me.

If I have a 4 day pass, does the inbound travel count as a travel day (so I've plan 3 days around Europe and 1 to go home)?

You are free to use these 2 optional home country travel days at any time during the validity of your pass, and yes they do come out of your 4 days.

On 2 of your travel days, you can also travel in your country of residence.
