How would I get my family through a ticket barrier with Interrail, if all our tickets are on one phone and we cannot speak the language of the country that we are in?

No barriers at all in Germany and Switzerland.

France only has barriers at large stations for TGV access, where you can use the barcode on the TGV reservation to open the gate.

Depends on the country.

Which country/ies are you thinking about?

In addition, barriers are the exception. They don't exist in most places.
