Need help with pass selection for my europe trip

Hi, Good day to everyone. We are a family of 3 and would be travelling to Europe in May . Our tentative itinerary includes 2 nights in Zurich, then 3 nights each in Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt and Luxembourg. I am thoroughly confused with EURAIL global pass routes . Some have said that the ticket officer has denied validity of EURAIL pass in ICE trains for intercity within Germany. Should I buy separate tickets for inter country travel and take a EURAIL Germany pass . But , that again does not include trams and buses . Also, Should I book seat reservations in advance ? I checked through this website . It said seat reservation is not mandatory. Any advice would be helpful since I have one senior person with me and it would be difficult if there are any last minute issues. Regards.

Eurail is certainly valid (and good value!) in Germany. The pass is valid on all trains except the low-cost competitor Flixtrain.

Zurich-Munich is a small train and it can get busy, esp. with the May holiday weekends. Book seats.

In general it is a good idea if you want to make sure you sit all 3 together. They cost 3€ per person on ÖBB.

No need to book weeks in advance in any case.

Off topic I know but... Frankfurt isn't a particularly nice city and Luxembourg is tiny (few hours/one night is enough). Any reasons to visit those places? In May I might suggest spending some relaxing time in the Alps, even if you're not into hiking. There are some stunning railways. ;)

Trams, subways, buses only cost a few €. Suburban (S-Bahn) trains are included in Germany but it isn't good value to activate a pass day while staying within the city.

That is completely incorrect. Eurail passes are valid in all IC and ICE trains in Germany.

Thank you so much for the advice . Do you have any specific places you would like to suggest especially in Germany since I have covered most of Switzerland previously? Thanks in advance.

Freiburg (Breisgau) and the Schwarzwald/Black Forest area is really nice. Though in France Strasbourg and Colmar on the other Rhine side are also beautiful.

Otherwise towns along Lake Constance like Lindau can be pleasant.

Perhaps some others can give suggestions or you can read online blogs, guidebooks as well.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, if you want a medieval town. Though there can be a lot of tourists.

Switzerland is generally more expensive than other countries.

I have a Interrail Global Pass
4 days within 1 month, Adult 1st class. I discovered that we don’t need 1st class. How can I change to 2nd class instead of 1st class? Do I have to return all passes and purchase all over again? its refoundable?

Thanks!

Passes are typically refundable against a €25 fee:

“Unused Passes are fully refundable within 7 days from purchase. After 7 days, a 10% refund fee per Pass applies, or €25, whichever costs less”

If you have purchased the refund protection, you only lose the extra fee for the protection.

<wrong>You don’t have any right to change your passes. You might try asking customer service anyway, but the chances are slim.</wrong>

Sorry, you can exchange passes, but the fee is still €25. There is an automatic way:

How to request an exchange

  • Step 1: Log into the same Account used to purchase your Pass.
  • Step 2: Purchase a new Pass via either Interrail.eu or Eurail.com, whichever applies to you (if you are unsure, please check here to see if you need an Interrail or Eurail Pass).
  • Step 3: Head to My Account > View Pass details > Refunds and exchanges.
  • Step 4: Select the Pass you no longer want, let us know why you are returning your Pass and then click 'Confirm refund' when ready. Our system will automatically recognise that you are requesting an exchange. Please note that after submitting your exchange request, it cannot be reversed or cancelled.
