night train - only one travel day?

Hi, what are the exact rules for night trains?

If I travel from Vienna to Stuttgart in March on the night train departing at 11:28 pm, and then continue by train to Bayonne (arriving at 6:28 pm): Will I have used up two travel days of an Interrail Global Pass, or only one day (because the border station between Austria and Germany is reached after midnight)?

As long as you take a train that is scheduled to depart your boarding station before midnight you can remain on it for it’s full journey and it will only use the one day, any trains taken that start after midnight will use the next day on your pass.

Hm, so can I board the night train at 11:28 pm in Vienna (with a regular ticket)? And only activate the Interrail ticket from Linz (0:50 am) onwards, so that I only need it on the second day – because I want to continue my journey to Bayonne with other trains then?

Only if you have a ticket for the journey from Vienna to Linz on that train. A ticket to St Pölten should be enough (departure 0:01, checked for tomorrow). Such tickets are only sold for seats. The staff may or may not allow you in a sleeper or couchette carriage already from Vienna.
