Old iPhone, but app still works: any potential problem?

I will be travelling from next week on an Interrail pass. Officially, it appears from the website that my iPhone is no longer supported by Interrail (it cannot be updated to iOS 16, which appears to mean that my Rail Planner app can no longer be updated). However, I did not notice until now (actually, it’s possible my phone was still supported when I bought the pass!): I still have the app and it still works just fine. I was able to add my pass and activate it, and QR codes are showing up as expected.

The only issue I have encountered so far is that the schedule is not always up to date (e.g., Eurostar trains are not showing up at all), so that I am having to add some journeys manually (which, anyway, I have had to do in the past as well, even with up-to-date app versions). This probably reflects the fact that it’s an old version of the app.

Do you think there is any risk that the QR codes generated by my app might not scan or be considered invalid? (I cannot tell how old my app version is, but I would assume about 6 months, definitely less than a year).

That's a very old version. The current app version is 50.14.0:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/eurail-interrail-rail-planner/id579547877

The version history on that page only goes back to 24/2/2025, to version 49.2.0. Looking at web.archive.org, 45.1.2 must be from sometime in December 2024.

Normally the app will auto update, but iOS might not do that if the app update is not available for your iOS version.

I'm not sure if your version already uses the online timetables: check More > Settings and look for "Use live updates”. The offline timetables will be very out of date but online timetables shouldn't be too bad, if they still work with your app version.

What version is your app? See More and scroll to the bottom.

When did you buy your pass? Then we can check what iOS version was required at that time.

Thanks! Version 45.1.2.

As for your second question, I’ve just tried looking into it: it appears Conditions of Use were updated in January 2025 (version 12) to mandate iOS 16. I’ve bought my pass after that, I’m afraid… I didn’t even consider that my phone could possibly be too old.

Thank you! Yes, it must be the latest version compatible with iOS 15. That version does support the online timetables, and most trips can be added normally and correspond to current schedules. Cross-channel Eurostar trips (but not ex-Thalys Eurostar trips) are missing, probably because their schedule is incompatible with this old version in some way (perhaps because of the fact that their schedule, as encoded by the Rail Planner, now has both a check-in time and a departure time).

So, it sounds like I’ll have to risk it. Hopefully QR codes will prove valid, and the manual entry of Eurostar journeys won’t raise eyebrows at the gates. Annoyingly, I guess I’ll have to buy a paper pass next time.

It is strange that you wouldn't see Eurostar trains at all. If you do see Eurostar trains, then you may have to subtract 35 minutes of the departure time. The journey details will show the correct departure time. Also you need to select "London” or "London St Pancras Intl” and not "London St Pancras”.

So, it sounds like I’ll have to risk it. Hopefully QR codes will prove valid, and the manual entry of Eurostar journeys won’t raise eyebrows at the gates.

Adding trains manually isn't a problem at all.
