Outbound/inbound - what if you don't use them?

Having trouble understanding outbound / inbound travel days, I basically want to know if I can use them at all.  I’m from Ireland and will be flying to The Netherlands, and then flying home from Italy.  Am I able to use my first and last train journeys as inbound/outbound journeys, or would this be invalid as my country of residence is Ireland? Is it just for trains in Ireland for me for example?

You can use your inbound/outbound journeys in Ireland to get to/from the airport. Do note though that they are not extra travel days. It's just that on 2 of your travel days, you can also travel in your country of residence.

Ah I see thank you very much I understand now :)
