We (2 seniors) are traveling from Vienna to Prague, then Prague to Salzburg, then back to Vienna to fly home. Prague to Salzburg and then back to Vienna are pricey if I want a refundable ticket. I hate to be locked into a non refundable ticket. Advice?

You can’t have both cheap and flexible, but if you time it right you can have the best of both worlds.

Vienna to Prague by Railjet costs a maximum of €59, bought on the day.

If you travel on Regiojet, it will probably be less, even booking late. Just as an example, I could buy a ticket for tomorrow for under €20 on regiojet.com.

Prague to Salzburg. Maximum fare €79. Again, I see prices tomorrow for €20 on the Czech Railways website cd.cz.

Salzburg to Vienna - again you have a choice of two operators, ÖBB and Westbahn. Maximum €65, again you can find it for less even the day before.

The minimum pass you can get is for 4 days travel, but you’d only use 3 of them. I would stick with single tickets, and try to buy at least the night before travel.

Thanks so much!

After going a couple times a year before COVID, it’s been a year since we’ve been to Europe so I’m out of practice. And maybe stressing too much about booking a few months in advance.  I booked the Vienna to Prague and it was inexpensive.  And refundable. The other 2 legs - not so easy. It sounds like I should book the other trips when we’re there so I’m not worried about it being refundable. And if there are cheaper last minute routes to Prague, I can still cancel what I booked.

Thank you for the advice and speedy response!
