Since my wife and myself started interrailing again three years ago, we always used paper passes as I did already more than 40 years earlier. This year we want to travel Great Britain and I wonder if we better switch to mobile passes this year as the ticket barriers present on many British station can probably read the QR-codes generated when adding a journey to the pass. And we would not need assistance of a station staff member to enter or exit the platform. Are there any experiences with Interrail/Eurail passes and British ticket barriers?

Unfortunately, the mobile pass is no different. The QR codes almost never work at ticket barriers in my experience. (Although I have heard recent reports of them sometimes working, so changes may be afoot. I believe there are technical differences in how the QR code is created that mean if you’re only using your pass in the UK on a travel day, you get a code that’s more likely to work. Feedback appreciated!)

But in the UK, all gates must be either staffed or left open, so you’ll never be unable to get through.
