Ticket price plus Reservations for Nightjet are the same regardless if you have Eurail or not

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this issue. I purchased a Ticket/Reservation for a double sleeper unit with a shower and WC on the Nightjet NJ461 Amsterdam to Munich on 12/09/2025. It came to my attention that OBB is charging the same amount for reservations/tickets whether or not you use your EURAIL passes for the Ticket portion of the travel that is supposed to be giving a discount for the travel portion. In 2 instances the same price was to be charged whether I provided information that I had a Eurail pass or not. Both ticket prices are the same for 2 different dates of service,  Two of these reservations show that I was getting a EURAIL discount, however there was no actual discount given. One set of these reservations I did in incognito mode just in case the OBB app was detecting my computer IP address but shows the same result €679,80 and in the other case €739,80. I contacted OBB to find out how this could be happening but given it’s a weekend I haven’t heard back from them but I am asking if anyone knows a logical explanation for this? Thank you

@Eurail Community Moderator Could you please check with your ÖBB contact if there's any incorrect information in the Nightjet price list? I notice the prices have recently been updated, and I suppose ÖBB themselves provided the prices, so it would be strange if they were already outdated.

In addition, could you please check with ÖBB how it's possible that their customer service repeatedly claim that there's no pass fare for (certain?) sleeper categories, whereas their website states the opposite?

In any case, I agree that this seems to be either a deceptive practice or a technical problem when calculating the pass fares.

Some other remarks:

  • The Nightjet Amsterdam-Augsburg on 12/9 does not show a pass price for an individual couchette, although there are berths available:
  • The Double pass fares are higher than the maximum fare mentioned in the recently updated price list on the Interrail/Eurail website:

If the maximum prices are correct, then it's clear there's a problem on ÖBB's booking website.

Also note that the pass discount is just €5 for Double and €0 for Double Plus, which looks very wrong:

Only for the Single category, the pass fare is €65 lower than the regular fare. When I select 2 passengers, there is no price difference for Double, but there still is the expected €130 difference for Single.

If you book far enough in advance, then there may be an advance fare that is the same price or sometimes a bit cheaper than the pass holder fare. The advance fares can't be changed or refunded, the pass holder fares can be refunded.

Without more details (date, number of people, comfort category) it's not possible to say more. Please note that Amsterdam-Munich is not served on 12 September. Do you mean 9 December?

Well I just did this yesterday for 12/09  and 08/09 Amsterdam to Munich on the OBB website but I do know that they changed the route because of construction and I would have to change trains, this was for 2 people and I just found the attachment link so you can see what I am talking about. I took these screen shots.

Excuse me 1 set were Amsterdam to Augsburg which is where I would change trains but the idea is still the same. The prices are the same with or without the eurail card regardless and I don’t get it.

That's not right indeed.

1 person "double comfort plus” is €304.90 regular fare and €299.90 with a pass. That difference is too small AFAIK, but at least we see that the price changed after adding a pass.

2 persons "double comfort plus” is €689.90 with or without a pass.

I'd call ÖBB if I were you: +43 5 1717. They speak English. It wouldn't be the first time the booking module shows strange and incorrect prices.

I tried to call this number and I assume people who are in the US must have a different number to call. This number does not work from the US

yes this has happened to me every time i have used night jet and it feels like a waste of money buying a inter rail pass. i have tried many variations and spoken to them on the phone and the discount is always only around 10 euros. please if anyone finds an answer to this can they let me know as we have decided not to travel by night jet anymore as it too expensive. the problem is they serve so many night routes which are major routes for night trains.

I submitted a complaint to the government agency that oversees OBB. Of course there is no guarantee that they will do anything but I posited the issue to them from the perspective this is illegal and they should open an investigation of OBBs practices at least pertaining to the Nightjet. I’ll update if I get any response.

The number can be reached from abroad, so you may need to check with your provider. IIRC it's a geographic number, so everybody should be able to reach it.

Was the €10 difference always between the pass fare and the regular "Sparschiene Komfort” fare? If that was the case, it should definitely be more than €10. A seat from Amsterdam to Augsburg on 12/9 is 79.90 without and 19.90 with pass discount and I'd expect the same difference for other comfort categories.

@Eurail Community Moderator

What are the requirements for ÖBB? Surely, the pass fare should be lower than the regular fare? Otherwise they can't claim to accept the pass.

Other than that, how much should the difference with the regular fare be? Surely, a €5 difference for a sleeper as I showed above can't be enough to say you accept passes? IMO that would mean you only get a minimal discount and you should not have to use a travel day.

Please enlighten us.

I guess it doesn’t matter because they close at 23:00 and I’m leaving tomorrow morning for Amsterdam so I can try the number from there if I don’t get a reasonable explanation via email by then.

OK Here we go. To call from the US the correct number to OBB is 011 43 5 1717. My phone provider was clueless, I found the number on a Rick Steeves discussion about a similar topic. I spoke with OBB this morning. When you get a reservation on the Sleeper Car you do not get a discount with the Eurail pass. I told him that OBB should do a better job in explaining that fact on their website. He said that the Eurail pass is included as a discount but for all other seats on the Night train. I told him fine but again OBB does not make it clear that there is no discount for the sleeper car. When I get there I am not expected to show my Eurail pass as what I bought IS the ticket and IS the reservation. I can also use the same ticket for the connecting train in Augsburg to Munich (not my Eurail pass). Hopefully this information is useful to others who are in the US specifically and other countries who think they are getting a discount on the Nightjet sleeper car with their Eurail pass.

The correct number to call OBB from the US is 011 43  5 1717 which I found on a Rick Steeves website. I spoke with OBB this morning and this is what they tell me. The sleeper car on the night train is the ONLY ticket/reservation that does not get a discount using the Eurail pass. The pass is there for all other seat reservations. I told this guy twice that OBB does not make this clear and is very deceptive. He tried telling me it was there somewhere but after we spoke I still couldnt find this anywhere. Also you do not need to show your Eurail pass when getting on the train. And even though OBB broke up the direct connection from Amsterdam to Munich the same ticket is good for any other train and depending on the train would just need a seat reservation. I had obtained that already. It makes no sense to me and they really couldnt explain it either, but as I said  OBB and or Eurail could do a better job of explaining that the Eurail pass is not always accepted for top levels of  cabins. Hopefully is info is useful.

Hey @rvdborgt ! That's a good question. I've sent it to the reservation team for an answer. As soon as we hear back from them, we'll update you here.

The correct number to call OBB from the US is 011 43  5 1717 which I found on a Rick Steeves website.

Modern phones should handle the + correctly, but if not, you should replace it by the international call prefix used in your country, which indeed seems to be 011 for the US.

I spoke with OBB this morning and this is what they tell me. The sleeper car on the night train is the ONLY ticket/reservation that does not get a discount using the Eurail pass.

This is incorrect. I've booked an ÖBB sleeper numerous times with a pass discount. Unfortunately, you talked with someone who's clueless. All comfort categories have a pass fare, except for the private couchette compartment. The price list is here:
https://www.interrail.eu/en/book-reservations/reservation-fees/night-train-reservation-fees

All ÖBB NJ fares are dynamic, but adding a pass should always result in a discount for the categories mentioned, in the Sparschiene Komfort fare level.

Well who am I to argue with these people? I spoke to 2 people at OBB and they both told me the same thing. I told them it makes no sense but when I get to Amsterdam I will definitely try again knowing those prices from the list you posted. Thank you for the information.

the 10 euros was for a couchette 4 or 6 birth we always book the cheapest sleeper couchette that we can

That was not my question though. Was the regular fare you compared with a "Sparschiene Komfort” fare? Or was is a non-refundable "Sparschiene Non-Flex”?

I spoke with OBB for more than a ½ hr and gave them the website you posted and they looked it up and told me it was not correct information and I told them to please note my call because it doesn’t make sense why there would be no discount for using the Eurail pass and that this information should be provided to users. -however these are the prices of the sleeper cars posted on the OBB website and if booking today I would be paying over 1000 euros for 2 people. I told her I intend to keep fighting this after I get back to the US because this is a deceptive practice and for those of us who will do this only a few times in our lives deserve an answer of a substantial refund.

This brings up a good point, and one that is definitely worth teasing out.

I think that NightJet are being a bit cheeky with a dynamically priced “Reservation fee for all routes (minimum / maximum)”.  A reservation fee is a reservation fee.  It’s not something that is supposed to vary based on demand.

A ticket price can vary based on demand.

This is so not right as in comparison i recently travelled from la-tour de carol to Paris night train with my 2 children. it was approx a 12 hour night train from the south of France to Paris. we only had to pay around 54 euros for 3 beds in a 6 berth couchette. without the eurail pass it would have cost around 250 euros so it was a good discount. I dont understand why night jet do not offer a similar discount
