Travelling by car in the middle. Does the Interrail trip has to be continuous or is it okay?

I am travelling from the UK through France, then meeting friends who will drive me to Italy in a car.  I then want to continue Eurail in Italy. So my question is….. does the trip need to be “continuous” by train between destinations for the pass to work, or can I break the destinations by car?  Thanks
