We are pleased to announce that the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland on the route between Zurich to Milan is expected to be fully operational again from the 2nd of September, according to SBB (Swiss Federal Railways). This comes over a year after the unfortunate freight train derailment that affected services. As a result, the daily EC Frankfurt-Milan service will resume on the 2nd September, improving direct connections between Germany and Italy.

We look forward to the full restoration of this critical transport link.

Good news

but i recommend for everyone  that has the time (1hour more) to take the trains across the Mountain Route (can be found easily by adding Göschenen or Airolo as via Stations) another advantage you can use these reservation free and connect with a Regionaltrain even reservation free into Milano instead of the supplement on the direct trains from Zürich to Milano.

@seewulf

Good idea.

But, if you want to travel thru the longest tunnel in the world, you can also take any IC/EC train without reservation until the border station of Chiasso, or already change to the RE80 in Lugano. You will have a train every 30 minutes after the reopening.
