We get loads of questions about city and local transport - especially whether it’s included in your Pass, and when not, how to navigate local transport once you’ve arrived at your destination.

To help with your planning, our expert community member @radlerton is building a growing collection of City Transport Guides: short, practical explainers on how to navigate local transport in popular destinations.

These guides are built based on your questions, and we’re adding more as we go. If you’ve traveled recently and have tips of your own, drop them in the comments - we’d love to include your insights in the guide library. Or let us know which guide we should make next!

📍 So far, we’ve got:

London: Local Transport Guide

Norway: Local Transport Guide

More coming soon - stay tuned!

And a huge thank you to @ralderton for making these 😍

Stockholm 🇸🇪

✅ Passes valid on trains, including the Arlanda Express.

❌ Passes are not valid on metro or trams.

How to pay

For all city travel, you can a contactless credit or debit card for occasional journeys, or a ticket in the SL app for more intensive use.

Contactless payment

Tap in at the station barriers, or when you board a tram, ferry or bus. You don’t need to tap out.

A tap buys you 75 minutes travel. Subsequent taps within that time don’t cost you anything, but you must tap in again.

There is no fare capping for contactless payments. If you’ll be buying more than 5 tickets in 24 hours, 8 in 72 hours, or 11 in a week, you’re better off with an app ticket.

Fares (2025)

  • Single (contactless or app, valid for 75 minutes) - 43 SEK
  • App ticket for 24h / 72h/ a week - 180/ 360/ 470 SEK

Concessions

  • Children under 12 - free with a fare-paying adult
  • Children/ youths 12-19 - discounted by about 40%
  • Seniors 65 and over - discounted by about 40%

Tip: If you’re eligible for a discount, you can register your contactless card with a discount in advance of travel.

Tip: The Stockholm Metro has some incredible art and architecture. Take a few moments to check out some of the stations if you get the chance. The city organises art tours twice a week.

Tip: SL tickets are also valid on ferries to Djurgården, home to several museums, and also some of the Waxholm ferries into the Stockholm archipelago. This makes for a very good-value half day trip, compared to paying one of the tourist boat trips.

Tip: Look out for historic tram 7N, which shadows the main 7 tram (useful for reaching Djurgården)

Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇬🇧

✅ Pass is valid on train services, the most useful being the short trip between Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket.

❌ Passes are not valid on bus or trams

How to pay

You can buy tickets at tram stops or from bus drivers, but the easiest is to use contactless on trams and buses.

  • Trams - tap on and off using the validators on the platform
  • Lothian Buses (except Airlink bus) - tap on when you board. Don’t tap off
  • Airlink 100 bus - state destination to the driver, then tap on only
  • East Coast and Lothian Country Buses - state destination to the driver, then tap on only

Prices (2025)

These prices are for tram and Lothian buses, within the city or airport. This will cover most tourist travel. For destinations further away, prices are higher

  • Adult Single (bus or tram, excluding airport) £2.20
  • Adult Day Cap £5.00 (£12.50 if travelling to/ from Airport)

Concessions

  • Under 5 - free
  • * 5-15 years - half price
  • * Family Day ticket (2 adults, 3 children) £9.00 for trams only, £12 for buses only, or trams + buses.

*  These tickets are only available from tram stop ticket machines, bus drivers, or Bus & Tram app, not contactless. You must buy before you board.

Airport

Edinburgh Airport is served by the tram (£7.90 one way) and the Airlink 100 bus (£5.50).

Passholders with a little extra time might want to take a train to Edinburgh Gateway, then a local bus to the airport. You can also take a tram from there, but you’ll pay the full £7.90.
