Best stop between Budapest and home (The Netherlands)

I'm planning a trip for 2,5 weeks and I got my route figured out for the most part. My idea was to see some cities I've never seen, enjoy it while having a route that makes sense and doesn't have very long travel days.

I could get the 5 day pass and take a sleeper train home from Budapest but that doesn't appeal to me very much. The 7 day pass is only 47 euro's more but I do need a good city that is between Budapest and home.

My plan is now:

Train to Berlin (1 day stay since I've already been there but great city and only 4,5 hours by train from home)

Berlin → (might get out in Dresden for lunch and fun) → Prague (3 day stay)

Prague → Vienna (3 day stay)

Vienna → Budapest (3 day stay)

Budapest → ?? not sure yet, 1 maybe 2 or 3 day stay depends on the place

Right now I'm thinking about:

  • Innsbruck, drove through there a few years ago on the way to Neustift im Stubaital and had the greatest time. I've never visited Innsbruck itself so that might be nice, Stubaital is also only an hour by bus away so I might also be able to hike for a day. I would be passing through Vienna again which maybe feels inefficient but is probably fine since the ride there is around 8 hours and train ride home is about 10 hours.
  • Graz, was considering this but the ride home is 14 hours so I don't think this is a good option
  • München, great city, spent 6 days there 2 years ago, seems a good option transport wise but not a new city for me.

I'm leaning towards Innsbruck since transport is fine and the location seems great but am I missing other good options that already move me back towards home?

What about Nürnberg for short stay? It should also be along your way and could be a good Option.

But what are you looking to do? Are you looking for interesting museums, nice cities or more for areas with interesting hikes?

Graz was nice, but 14hours during the day is pretty long for your way home. (But if you get a 7 day pass instead of 5 you could do another additional stop along the way home)

I originally planned to do visit Innsbruck on my last trip, but then my plan changed a bit and it did not fit in anymore. But it looked like a great place to visit.

You could go from Graz to Vienna and get the nightjet from there back to The Netherlands. A minicabin (sleeping pod) is quite reasonable, for about €60 interrail supplement.
