Hello,

i wanted to post about some of the train museum i visited on my travels.

France:

Mullhouse Cité du Train Great train museum. Another museum nearby nearby which is also woth a visit is the Musée Electropolis (a combined ticket for both museums is available)

Austria:

Eisenbahnmuseum Strasshof “Das Heizhaus”. I recommend to visit this museum on one of the event days. (Dampftag, etc.). The museum can be reached by train from Vienna.

Eisenbahnmuseum Schwechat: small train museum, easy to reach from vienna. But in my opinion not that interesting. I would recommend the Eisenbahnmuseum Strasshof “Das Heizhaus” over this one.

Germany:

DB-Museum Nürnberg: Great big Museum close to the main train station of Nürnberg.

DB-Museum Koblenz: This one i recommend doing on one of the days where there is an event.

Bayerisches Eisenbahmuseum: Lot of steam trains. Best time to visit is on a day where there is an event or some of them are running.

Slovakia:

There is an outdoor display of old trains near Bratislava. Was a fun visit but hard to get to and not really much of a museum)

Slovenia:

There is a small train museum in Ljubjana. Its an interesting building ant there are a few steam locomotives on Display.

Italy:

There is a fantastic train museum near Neapel. The museum and the trains are in great conditions. The museum is right next to a train station (if you arrive by train you als pay reduced admission). Absolutl worth a visit.

Belgium:

There is a great train museum near Bruxelles “Train World” Easy to get to and also quite big and nice. There is museumspass for bruxelles where this museum is also included.

I will updae with some pictures Later. And with some historic trains that regulary run

As Marvin Heer has mentioned two museums in the Vienna area I would like to add two more, one in Vienna and the other one in Mürzzuschlag.

The “Technisches Museum Wien” (“Vienna Museum of Science and Technology”) is not a dedicated railway museum, but the transportation and mobility collection includes also rail transportation. There are a few historic rail vehicles including the private car of empress Sisi. Right now and until August 2026 the special exhibition “Im Bann der Bahn: 200 Jahre Eisenbahn” (“Under the Spell of the Railway: 200 Years of Train Travel”) is shown. It is located in the vicinity of Schönbrunn Castle near the tracks of the Western Railway. The website of the museum is www.technischesmuseum.at.

The second one is the “Südbahnmuseum” (“Southern Railway Museum”) located in the town of Mürzzuschag, just “behind the Semmering”. (No offense of an arrogant Viennese, folks from Styria, but a quotation from the famous Fürstenfeld song of the Styrian band STS). Mürzzuschlag can be reached from Vienna via the famous Semmering line. The museum is located near the train station in a former workshop and roundhouse of the Southern Railway. It is dedicated to the history of railways in general and more specific to the Southern Railway which connected Vienna and Trieste (the most important harbour of the Austrian-Hungarinan empire) via the Semmering mountain pass, Graz, Maribor and Ljubljana. The roundhouse hosts the worldwide largest collection (according to the museum) of small railcars (draisines), pedal or motor powered, including road motor cars put on rails and a number of historic locomotives. The museum website can be found at www.suedbahnmuseum.at.

I have been to the technical Museum of Vienna before. Its quite nice.  Also worth a visit is the tram Museum in Vienna. I was surprised by how big it was.

On the Topic of technical Museums the “Verkehrshaus der Schweiz” in Luzern has a section on trains too. Its quite expensive, but you can spend atleast half a day there.

@Andreas1099 I might take a look at the train museum “Südbahnmuseum” on my next trip.

That list also did not include all the train museums i visited so far.

Poland:

There is also a nice train museum located in Warschau. Worth a visit. Entrance is free on 1 day of the week. But it is also pretty affordable.
