Hello,

I am planning my first interrailing trip and I would like to go through Germany and Austria as I have never been to those countries before. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding cities to visit. Ideally, I would like to go to Berlin and Vienna, as they seem the most interesting. Does anyone have any other ideas? Also, I would like recommendations regarding accommodation, public transport etc.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hamburg is my favorite city to visit Germany. Can definitly recommend going there. Regarding other places it would be helpfull to know what you are looking for. How many days do you plan to spend in Germany and Austria? What kind of accomodation are you looking for? (I mostly stayed in hostels so i could afford a longer travel)

Edit: Dresden and Stuttgart would be some more recommendations for Germany

On the way to Vienna Salzburg mitght be a good Idea ( I ften had it recommended to me, but did no get arround to visiting it yet)

Oh, there’s plenty of cities worth a visit.

My personal favourites in Germany: Freiburg (am Breisgau, nice base for the Black Forest region too), Dresden in Germany

Graz and Innsbruck are also recommended in Austria, I quite like them,

Don’t restrict yourself to the biggest cities, the smaller cities and towns are often quite worthwile. But there are hundreds of options so, choosing is losing. Some suggestions: Aachen, Trier, Koblenz, Lübeck, Lindau,...

Plan your journeys via www.bahn.com or www.oebb.at/en (most local transport is also present in those planners. By mindful you can’t take city buses, trams or metro’s with your pass).

So if you’re planning a lot of local transport when you’re travelling, it might be interesting to get a Deutschlandticket in Germany (for local transport and regional train trips, that aren’t worth an Interrail day).

I second Freiburg and Dresden.

And I love the area around Lake Constance: Konstanz or Lindau in Germany, Bregenz in Austria.

Franconia: Nürnberg, Ansbach, Bamberg

Up North: Flensburg, Lübeck, Stralsund

but there are lots of others

Nürnberg is a good idea, also the DB Museum is located there in case you are interested in trains.
