How far can you go in one travel day?

I'm always looking for good value for money 😉. This is a single travel day, boarding the Caledonian Sleeper at its first station after midnight (Dunblane), and reaching Turin in time for the Intercity Notte much later the same day.

I've also looked at HÀrnösand in Northern Sweden to Basel. I'm sure there are longer journeys possible.

Any suggestions?

I've considered trying to do Amsterdam-Vienna by ICE aiming at arriving before the departure of the Vienna-Bucharest sleeper (19:08, arrives Bucharestat 13:38). Unfortunately doesn't seem very realistic looking at the timetables through Germany now.

I guess you need no engineering works anywhere and then that would still be tight.

Same train has coaches going to Kyiv, I think.

(Edit: silly me, forgot that Interrail wouldn’t be valid.)

Another idea would be to visit as many countries as possible, using only daytime trains. I found 9:

Aachen (DE) - Maastricht (NL) - LiÚge (BE) - Luxembourg (LU)  - Mulhouse (FR) - Basel (CH) - Buchs - (FL) - Innsbruck (AT) - Fortezza/Franzensfeste (IT)

For a few more km, you can start in Oostende, and still get to Vienna or Györ in time for the sleeper.

My new winner is Lamezia to Stockholm, at 2778km, using the very handy 2359 SnÀlltÄget from Hamburg.

I’m a bit addicted to this now! Once we find the winner, I might have to do it 😀.

This journey wins so far on longest duration, if not on distance. Starting at Svilengrad, close to the BG/ TR border, on the Sofia-Istanbul train.

  • Svilengrad 0045-0956 İstanbul Halkali
  • İstanbul SĂ¶ÄŸĂŒtlĂŒĂ§eßme 1220-1636 Ankara Gar
  • Ankara Gar 1800-2010 (+1) Kars

43h25, and 1994km. All on one operator.

This is my contender distance-wise (not possible every day due to engineering works): 2588 km.

- RJ Ringsted - Praha hl.n. 00:07 - 11:25

- EC Praha hl.n. - Budapest-Nyugati 13:37 - 20:28

- EN Budapest-Kelenföld - Bucuresti 21:55 - 13:38
