Heads-up that there are fresh strikes proposed on LNER affecting weekends from 31 August to 14 November. (Weekdays are unaffected, as are other operators.)

It’s likely that they will run a reduced service on the core section of the route (London-Edinburgh, and probably London-Leeds). Expect reduced frequency and fewer early morning/ late night services. And the occasional late-notice cancellation.

You should also expect no LNER services north of Edinburgh, or to the secondary destinations (Lincoln, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, anywhere beyond Leeds).

All these destinations can be reached on other operators, who are not affected by the strike.

It’s a very good idea to make a free seat reservation, and to double-check exact train times on the day of travel in case of changes.

The strike timetable for the coming weekend (31 August - 1 September) is published, and it’s a severely-reduced service. 

There are just five trains each way between London-Edinburgh (normally two per hour) with the last leaving London at 1500. Slightly more to York and Newcastle. Three to Leeds. 

I’d recommend avoiding LNER completely on weekends if the same timetable is maintained through the strikes, as these services will be very busy (as will other operators on the line). Make sure you have a reservation if you do travel!

Well, a couple of hours later and it seems like the strike has been called off!

The reduced timetable for 31 August - 1 September will still be in place, as it’s too late to reinstate trains, but the remaining weekends should see a normal service.
