Hi,

Me and my family are going to travel to Slovenia for the first time. We have a four day interrail pass for the longs streches, the rest of the tickets we plan to buy there.

Our plan is Netherlands - Munchen - Maribor - Postonja - Koper - ljubljana - Stuttgart? - Netherlands.

I have seat reservations for the trips Netherlands - Munchen en Munchen - Maribor.

A few questions:

  • Do we need to buy the train tickets within Slovenia (between Maribor - Postonja - Koper - ljubljana) in advance or can we just show up on the day and buy at the trainstation?
  • I am trying to see if there are still tickets for the night train ljubljana - Stuttgart, but the OBB site says currently not reservable. Does anyone know whether that is a temporary problem?
  • Any tips for nice day trips from Maribor, Postonja or Koper :) ?

Thanks in advance!

You can just show up at the station and buy tickets on the day itself for all domestic trains in Slovenia. Small countries usually don’t have mandatory reservation for their domestic trains. Did the same as you a couple of years ago, 4 days interrail to get there and back, buy normal tickets in Slovenia.

For which date are you trying to book the night train?

I can really recommend Lake Bohinj, (station Bohinsjka Bistrica) with free shuttle busses to the lake. Beautiful place, lots of outdoor activities and a lot less busy than Lake Bled. Might be even worthwile to stay a couple of days there.

From Postojna you could head to Nova Gorica/Gorizia: it is the European Capital of Culture this year so there are loads of events. The railway line is pretty scenic.

I also agree with Lake Bohinj. :)

Thank you both! We will see if we have time for Lake Bohinj and/or Nova Gorica, both sound nice.

I just calles OBB and booked the night train by phone, there was a mistake with the price on the website, so that was why t did not work.
