On the Eurail website there is a list of 25 scenic train routes to try in 2025. I like the sound of number 9 Mainz to Cologne. On searching the trains there are numerous trains departing Mainz and going to various places but stopping in Cologne.

Could someone advise which train or trains are the best for this journey

@Rossm2

You should take an IC (Intercity), EC (Eurocity) or ICE (Intercity Express). On Bahn.de check the journey information to be sure that the train stops at Koblenz and Bonn. An example (for information only, check the timetable again before departure):

If you’d like to travel slow and really take in the views, maybe even stop to stroll around the gorgeous little towns, I’d very much advise you to take the regional train “RB 26”, it starts in Mainz Hbf and takes you all the way to Cologne but stops at every station on the way. It’s an hourly train which makes your journey quite flexible!

Recommend stops

  • St. Goar (famous for the Loreley)
  • Oberwesel
  • Koblenz
  • Bonn-Bad Godesberg (famous for the Drachenfels)
  • Bonn Hbf (beautiful town)
