On my current trip i discovered Pontresina and the area arround it. I started without a plan and ended up there. But the region arround here is awesome as there a a lot of things that can be reached from the train (Rhätische Bahn).

For example Pontresina has a small canyon next to the city. There is a ca. 3,5 km long walk arround it with information.

Then a couple station from Pontresina (Mortagratsch) you can hike for 3,5 km to reach a glacier (Mortagratsch glacier) from the train station. The last past of that hike is difficult mountain terrain.

From the Mortagratsch train station you can also hike along some waterfalls.

Then there is Bernina Diavolezza where you can take a gondula up to almost 3000m.

And its also situated along the Bernina railway route to italy if that is something you want to do (nice scenic ride)

There’s also a lovely walk you can do between Ospizio Bernina and Alp Grüm. Just over an hour.

@ralderton  I already left that area, but as nearly all of the cable cars were still closed i plan to visit it again.

Got pretty lucky with the weather. But now i am heading to Ljubjana.

I also did a short hike from Pontresina to St. Moritz. It went past a lake were you can go swimming (You can also get there by bike.)

On my way to get there i took the historic train from Landquart to Davos and Filisur. (It runs 2 times each day between Davos and Filisur) Last weekend it was even running with the locomotive “Rhätisches Krokodil”. Interrail is also accepted. For more Information:
