Starting in Malaga mid August with a 7 days in a month pass. Looking for inspiration and advice. I hope to be away for 28 days and “must do’s” are Madrid/Cuenca. Florence, Innsbruck/Vienna, Budapest and Prague. Plan then to fly home from either Wroclaw. Solo traveller 60+ so advice on packing/hostels etc most welcomed.

Interrail itself has some suggested itineraries, which you can use as a basis for planning https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/trip-ideas

But I would say the best way is to have a look at the rail map, then start plugging cities into a timetable search such as Bahn.com to give you an idea of how much you can, or want to do, in a day.

To get from Spain through France to Italy, you have a few options, all start from Barcelona or Madrid with the high-speed line to somewhere in southern France. Depending on your interests, pick a city to stopover. Then

  • to Chambèry Challes-les-Eaux, then TGV to Turin/ Milan
  • to Lyon, then by local train to Geneva and onwards to Italy (very scenic, but much slower)
  • to Nice, then local train across the border to Ventimiglia

Packing - as little as you can get away with! Nobody ever comes home from an Interrail trip and says they wish they’d packed more...
