Suggestions for a place to visit between Budapest and Ljubljana?

Hey!

My plan is to travel from Budapest to Ljubljana in May 2024 but the 8 or 9 hours train ride sounds bit too long. Do you have any recommendations in which city we should stop on the way (for one or two nights). Apparently Zagreb or Graz could be an option but do you have any other ideas? Or which one of those two you would recommend? We are two girls and trying to find a budget-friendly option :)

I would go straight between the 2 : the direct train takes 7h42, it's manageable and times aren't horrible (9am departure). Get food prior to boarding and enjoy the slow journey through the Hungarian countryside.

Otherwise Graz or Celje/Zidani Most maybe.
