Tips for stops between UK and Austria

Hi

We are hoping to travel from UK to Austria in August and would like to stop off somewhere on the way there and somewhere else on the way back, to break up the journey. Probably 2-3 nights in each place. We have previously visited Paris, Brussels and Köln. Any suggestions for good places en route to spend a couple of days? We are a family of 4 with 2 children age 12 and 15.

Considering possibly Strasbourg, Lille, Bruges or Frankfurt, but also open to other suggestions.

We did a similar trip last year (with 2 children aged 11 and 14). 

We got the sleeper from Brussels to Vienna then Vienna to Munich and then south to the lakes (Ammersee). From there to Dijon (travelling through Switzerland). Back to Uk via Paris.
