Im trying to make a booking from London to Manchester Piccadilly on the 31st July. On the app it says seat reservation as only recommended. It doesn’t actually allow you to book or reserve a seat. How do I do this and know that there are seats available ?

It is not possible to book reservations for trains in UK via APP or Eurail.com. Normally people in UK do not reserve seats (except night trains and Eurostar), but you can do it for free or a small fee at the ticket office in UK or online via GWR (see how to do so below)

No need to do and trains run ev 20-30 mins on this line. Avoid the main peak times and you find plenty of seats UNmarked as being REServed. The bigger thing to worry is if they are going to strike again-they do that very often lately.
