So I’m planning a 3 day trip, 3 persons, in July through Inverness, Aberdeen, Edimburgh, Fort William and Glasgow.

The Interrail app says the reservation is optional, and I read somewhere that U.K. trains rarely get full.

So I’m well in going without seat reservations?

These are the ScotRail routes where seat reservations are possible: https://www.scotrail.co.uk/seat-reservations

I didn’t bother last summer. Some trains were busy but never packed. As with all British reservations they are free of charge.
