Are you still guaranteed seats even if you don't reserve seats?

Of what I understand, it’s not mandatory to book seats on all trains, but what can happen if you don’t? Is there a chance that you will have to stand?? I’m new to traveling alone and would really use some help on this, thank you.

A seat is only guaranteed when you make a reservation. Without a reservation, there's always a small chance you'll have to stand for part or all of the journey. It doesn't happen often though. Trains are usually big enough to meet demand.

Some trains simply don't offer reservations at all as well, like suburban trains or domestic trains in NL, BE and CH. Seating works in a first come first served basis and you're always allowed to stand.

If you'd like some further advice, mention the route. Highly likely some of us have already been on it! ;)
