Arriving to Innsbruck in January 2026, construction some trains not stopping?

Hi, not my first time traveling by train, but it is the first time seeing this message for the place I have a hotel booked right by the train station.

I’m un able to book seat reservations between Zurich and Innsbruck and this message shows at the top. The high speed trains I was looking at taking appear to be heading other places than Italy, will the Budapest, and Croatia high speed trains be stopping in Innsbruck or should I take it as a bad sign that they aren’t offering seat reservations yet. I’m coming from Freiberg Im Breisgau in Germany, should I be thinking about a different destination other than Innsbruck...we wanted the Austria alp, sledding day trips, and winter experience. My train to Schwaz the next morning now looks like it;s been replaced with a bus.

OBB message here : Construction work - rail replacement traffic/detour/stoping omitted

Are the trains displaying on the timetable still planned since they are the ones not going to Italy, or should I expect all of those to cancel as well? timing isn’t super critical, but I’d rather reroute the trip than not be able to reach my hotel ect with in that day. We wanted to take the 8:04 departing Freiburg Im Breisgau to Zurich, then zurich to Innsbruck train.

Innsbruck Hbf <=> Jenbach train station

Due to construction work, some long-distance trains cannot run between Innsbruck Hbf and Jenbach Bahnhof from 07.01.2026 to 29.01.2026. Some long-distance trains are being diverted. For long-distance trains from/to Italy via Brennero/Brenner, the stop at Innsbruck Hbf is omitted. We have set up a rail replacement service for you. The night trains are diverted. Due to construction work, there may be some restrictions on the booking of seat reservations. We apologize.

The construction works are between Innsbruck and Jenbach, which is why the train to Schwaz is being replaced by a bus.

There will be trains from Zurich to Innsbruck, but the timetable has not been finalised yet.

For any specific advice, please always mention route (with stations, not countries), date and if possible departure time.

Thank you, it looks like I just need to wait for the finalized schedule on the 14 of December, to make my travel plans. I’m traveling from Freiburg Im Breisgau HBF, to Innsbruck HBF, it looks most likely I’ll be going through Zurich HBF. If Reservations aren’t available is that an indication they aren’t expecting the trains to run the projected route on January 19th, or am I overthinking it?

@Justbeatourist

I always reserve seats from Zürich to Innsbruck, trains are often busy because only one part of the train starts in Zürich, a second one is usually added in Feldkirch. Reservations cost only 3€ on oebb.at.

Unnecessary between Freiburg (Breisgau) and Zürich. ICE are always late and you must take other trains as planned, sometimes with an unplanned change in Basel Bad Bf (German station). I would plan at least one hour connection time in Zürich HB.

Here's some more information on the engineering works and diversions:

There will be trains from Zurich to Innsbruck.

@Danhiel

Thank You, I know what you mean about the trains from Freiburg into Switzerland. My mom and I once caught the 5:30 am train taking us to Basel at around 7:10 am, when we were expecting the 7:15 ICE train. I don’t currently have the option to reserve seats on the train from Zurich to Innsbruck due to construction. I’ll keep my eye out for it. As of right now, I’m not too concerned because If I can’t reserve seats neither can anyone else it appears ( even regular tickets aren’t providing the option for a seat reservation.) Luckily it looks like I don’t need to try to change my destination away from Innsbruck. :) I’m really excited to see winter there. Looks cozy and fun. I think I’ll even still brave the bus replacement to Schwaz if it looks like it’s running smooth.

@rvdborgt

Thank You for Sharing the information. It’s still a bit a confusing, but very helpful. I actually booked myself and dad at the Ibis right at the Innsbruck HBF, does it look like that area will be louder than normal with construction? should I consider trying to move more to the main area? It looks like rail replacement buses aren’t departing from right by the HBF.  It looks like we’ll still have an amazing time in Innsbruck.

For anyone checking this same information.

The trains are not running that day between Zurich and Innsbruck. I have shifted my itinerary to take the stress out of travel that week. I’m sure there will be a much slower route that day, and may even actually be just fine. Every train on OBB is saying to take the next train, so I gave up….the transalpine route will have to wait for a different trip.

Since timetables are still not ready for that period: what makes you think trains are not running?

@rvdborgt . That’s Fair the trains are not on the time table yet, but there are many scheduled to run that will not be. I plan to reroute myself so I don’t need to track it or worry about it. It’s not merely the trains into Innsbruck HBF affected and if you look at OBB scotty it’s not looking great. I mentioned they might be fine, or supplemented. There’s no real reason for me to take this gamble as I had a different location interchangeable with Innsbruck. A few emails to a few hotels and I’m sorted, if I wait until the time table finalized I may not have the option to rearrange my schedule.

In fact we don't know yet what will be running. I interpret the message as a general warning that the timetable is not final yet. They could also have removed the trains entirely or just leave them in the timetable without warning until the alternative timetable is ready, both of wich are worse IMO.

However, as far as I can see there are no engineering works west of Innsbruck during that period, so some trains should be running there. The fact that they already added a warning usually means the timetables will follow soon.

Hi everyone,

Just picked up this thread as planning to travel in early January 2026 from Salzburg to Lech to ski, and then from Lech to Innsbruck to fly home. We’ve already booked hotels and flights and didn’t realise there’d be such disruption to the rail network.

I’m debating whether to book refundable tickets (on Omio), to make sure we have something, or to wait for the schedules to be issued from 14 December.

What do you recommend we do?

Thanks so much!

Vienna-Salzburg isn't a problem.

Salzburg-Lech will have a bus replacement, probably between Jenbach and Innsbruck.

Lech-Innsbruck shouldn't be a problem.

The timetables for 8/1 and 11/1 have not yet been published. Keep an eye on fahrplan.oebb.at.

You will need a regular bus between Lech and Langen am Arlberg or between Lech and St. Anton am Arlberg (depending on the connection).

Hey if anyone can help me please?

I’m planning to travel on the 24th Jan 2026 from Munich to Innsbruck.

From what I read, this train will be Jenbach and I will have to take a bus replacement? Is this right?

Also I read they might have an additional stop at Steinach am Brenner, has this been confirmed? That will be much easier right?

thanks!

Trains from/to Italy will have an additional stop there. Whether that will be easier or faster depends on the timetables, which have yet to be published.

I'd expect it within the next few weeks, but I don't have any more info than what I've already posted.
