I am travelling in October with Ave international Montpellier - Madrid. I have read that I can get seat reservations on 3 sites; (Interrail, Happyrail and Raileurope). 
 

But what site is recommended? I am travelling with 2 people and I have an interrail global pass 2nd class.

Whichever one is working today! The reservation is the same. The availability should be the same, but isn’t always.

I tend to use Rail Europe where possible.

Would you also recommend happyrail? As both raileurope and interrail self service do not work…

Happyrail is a good place to book.

If it doesn't work there either, then first check on renfe.com whether tickets are actually on sale for your train. If so, then mention date and departure time so people can check what's happening.

Please ask questions in the community and not via a private message. That's the quickest way to get a response. I don't work for Eurail/Interrail.

The train I am taking is AVE international 9730 Montpellier - Madrid in 12 of october. Interrail self service now says that the train is sold out for pass holders… while the train only goes in sale 90 days prior which is today…

There's no such thing as a 90-day booking horizon for Renfe trains. Renfe don't have a sensible booking horizon policy and certainly not a fixed booking horizon for any of their trains. This AVE can currently be booked until 3/11, see renfe.com.

Reservations have been open for some time. Reservations can be booked via Rail Europe:

For some reason, Interrail only offers 1st class. ​@Eurail Community Moderator could you please check what's going wrong here? 2nd class is available so should be offered.
