Berlin to Sweden sleeper with SJ.se

We're a family of 5 looking to book the overnight sleeper from Berlin to Stockholm. Couchettes sleep 6 and we'd like a private sleeper cabin. Booking for 5 (each with Railcard), it's 2,075 SEK, in a shared cabin while the private cabin comes in at an eye watering 11,410 SEK!!!

Adding a 'phantom child' ticket (without a Railcard) to ensure we don't share, comes in at a reasonable 3,192SEK.

Has anyone had experience of booking for a non travelling child?! Are there any risks of doing this? Penalty fares?! 😬

My advice in these situations is to book whatever additional ticket make most sense (is cheapest) and then on the night *if* anyone asks (which is very unlikely) just say that the child isn’t traveling.  It’s technically correct.  You don’t need to say that the child doesn’t exist.  If nothing else . . . you have paid a fare for the berth and it’s nobodies business if you use the berth or not.

Great question, and nice to hear that you'll be taking this sleeper train with your family. To be sure that you're booking correctly, I recommend to contact the railway carrier directly. (in case you haven't already)

They can then confirm your question and any other concerns you might have. If you check their FAQs, the top one list their contact details: https://www.snalltaget.se/en/faq

Except that this question was about the SJ night train:
