hello, i was wondering how late i can wait to decide which train and on which day i want to take the train? Is it possible to change your mind on the travel day if already booked?

Please provide details: route, destination, preferred travel time, date,… in order to get a proper answer on this question. We can’t guess on which one of the tenthousands daily trains in Europe you’ll be on.

In General: if you catch a train with mandatory reservations, you’ll need to rebook or cancel and make new reservations, depending on availability.

On trains with optional or non-reservable trains, no problem to make decisions on the spot, just before the train leaves.

Generally speaking, in most countries it’s not possible. For example, mandatory reservations in Poland, Czechia and Hungary can’t be cancelled (except for RegioJet which lets you do it free until 15 minutes before departure and Leo Express (also free until 15 minutes before departure)).

  • France is the big exception: they let you cancel it free of charge until the scheduled departure and you can rebook yourself on another train until 30 minutes after departure, which only works at the ticket counter, call center or ticket machine.
  • In Italy you can let yourself be rebooked through the callcenter or at the ticket counter and can only cancel paying a deduction of 20%.
  • In Spain you can only cancel paying a deduction of 5%.

Just as a quick excerpt as those are popular countries and all happen to require reservations.
