Booking seat reservations in Switzerland

I'm trying to book seat reservations for a day-trip from Interlaken to Engelberg (via Luzerne). The Eurail app days I can book it through them, and all of the other suggested booking sites also don't have this journey as an option to reserve seats.

The first train is PE2915 (Panorama Express) to Luzerne. Hoping someone may be able to assist please?

I think you can book them via SBB but to be honest it's a waste of money. Nobody in Switzerland books seats and there are always enough seats.

I msged SBB and it seems there's no "discount" to reflect that I hold a 1st class Eurail Pass?

@Todd Bruce

it is impossible to reserve seats in the SBB app. Follow the link in my previous post to find information.

Hi! I have the same question. I read the blog saying that it’s not worth booking seats in Switzerland. And SBB doesn’t seem to sell them anyway. However, I tried via DB. My trip is not available yet but seats for the same train for earlier dates are already sold out. Does this mean that the train is fully booked or does it only mean that DB hasn’t got any more seats to sell?

The train I’m talking about is from Visp to Basel on a Tuesday morning in July. Would you say this is a busy line or a normal one, with no seat reservations needed?

The train cannot ‘sell out’, because like almost all trains in Switzerland, reservation isn’t compulsory. Just find an empty seat and use it. At very busy times, you might end up standing for part of the journey, but this has only happened to me once in dozens of Swiss journeys.

The advice ‘not worth booking a seat’ is exactly what it says!

Hello @TKL

Could you give us the date and time of departure? You have some Eurocity trains on this line coming from Italy and these trains could be sold out. I would choose other Intercity trains if possible.

The date is 8th July, leaving at 9.27 from Visp.

OK, I forgot something. In this period the line from Domodossola to Milan is closed, it means that this Eurocity train comes only from Domodossola. It explains why it is not open for reservation. Other trains have usually more seats as the Eurocity.

That EC should have 2 units: one starting in Brig. There will be plenty of seats to choose from. General tip: board at the front or rear, rather than middle.

Ok - indeed, the connection from Visp to Basel is not available for seat reservations - Interrail.eu says there is a “technical error” or something.

A few more questions: The city I’m originally leaving that day will be Sion, and I need to reach a train that leaves from Basel to Hamburg at 1.06 pm.

There are no direct connections from Sion to Basel but there are several other options that go from Sion via Visp, Spiez or Bern - or via Visp and Spiez.

Do you have any recommendations? How much time should I reserve to change to the next train? Should I prefer as few changes as possible? Of course, anything can happen, but are the trains in Switzerland usually on time?

@TKL

Take direct trains or change is your preference. I don’t know if you travel with big luggage or not, if you are in good physical condition or not.

If you don’t take a direct train from Visp to Basel, you should change in Bern and not in Spiez.

The last possiblility is to leave Sion at 10:20, but you have only 5 minutes to change in Basel. In my opinion it is too short. I suggest to leave Sion at least one hour earlier and to have a break in Basel (08:57 or 9:20).

Unfortunately ICE to Germany are often cancelled between Basel SBB (Swiss station) and Basel Bad Bf (German station). In this case it is better to leave Basel SBB 30 minutes earlier with the local train (S-Bahn) or the tram # 2 to Basel Bad Bf.
