Hi, I am struggling to find a train from Budapest to Zagreb on July 10th 2025. Would anyone be able to help me out? I tried to book one on MAV website although it came up with reservation error every time. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

After some research on the internet, there looks to be, starting 21st June, a closure on the cross-border section (Gyékényes - Koprovnica) in order to build a new bridge. A train would run independantly in each country. For example the Croatian train is running 20:26 - 22:21 instead of the usual 20:18 - 22:00.

A bus service seems difficult to organize since there are no cross-border roads in that area.

What are your options? First of all, wait and see if they manage to run a bus or divert the train. Then, look at Flixbus or similar.

I've read something once about that closure, let me see if I can find it tomorrow.

I've not found anything, sorry. Maybe someone else can advise.

However if I do stumble across something, I'll remember to update here. ;)

I am in the same boat, albeit the train I wish to take departs six weeks later, on 20th August.

It looks to me like the IC204, which travels from Budapest to Zagreb (15:35 - 22:00) doesn’t operate during the summer.  Instead, the IC1206 does (at least according to the Croatian railway company).

I contacted MAV to ask and they weren’t very helpful, but did imply that there would be a train running, perhaps via Zidani Most, but that the timetable is not ready, hence why you’re getting a reservation error.  Perhaps that is due to whatever work is going on on the line?

I did find this article from January about the Drava bridge and, whilst it does seem like the bridge itself is up and running, it does mention further works throughout 2025.

MAV do sound like they are quite late updating their timetables, so I plan on checking back regularly and keeping my fingers crossed.  If all else fails, I’ll be dragging my 13yo, coach-sick daughter on to a Flixbus instead!

I came across this earlier today:

Egy hónapon át a Nyugati közlekedését is érinti a rákosrendezői pályakarbantartás | MÁV-csoport

It’s an article about an entirely different line, but it twice refers to revised schedules being available in the “first week of June”.  It may just be for the line in question, but it could also be a wider timetable release, as it seems MAV run a slightly different timetable over the Summer and that hasn’t been released yet.
