just wondering if anyone has any advise on how to book onto a train from Budapest to Zagreb in July as all the seat reservations have sold out and to buy a ticket online seems very difficult due to a changing of countries. any advise would be appreciated.

No reservation needed for that route and also train is usually not very crowded (at least across the border, inside the countries there might be some people on the train).

Sure. You can book a reservation anywhere you like. Until now, I've managed to avoid booking via Interrail and thus avoided their fees and overpriced optional reservations.
