Answer

Do I need to book where I can?

We are travelling as a 6 next week (from 11th) around Italy and France. On the first day we have booked an overnight train and on the last day we have booked a fast train. On the other 3 days of travelling we are taking it easy and taking the day to travel on slow trains. Am I being naive by not booking trains for those days? I understand that not all trains can be booked but I don’t want to get caught without a train to get on.

Any advice would be great.

The regional trains in France and Italy can't be booked (except for a few in France with mandatory reservations). They may sometimes be busy, but don't worry about it.

Thanks for the reply. That is reassuring.

Some of the routes have trains at different times that need reservations whilst others don’t. They are all the same length and routes. I wonder why that is.

Regional trains and TGVs sometimes use the same lines and then there aren't any big difference in travel time.
