Hi,

About this

On 27 August 2023, a major landslide occurred on the line close to the tunnel at Saint-André à La Praz. All traffic through the tunnel, including the major TGV and Frecciarossa services between the Gare de Lyon and Milan Centrale / Porta Garibaldi were suspended. Repairs have been complicated and the line is not expected to re-open until late 2024 or mid 2025.

Do you know if we can expect the tunnel to be operational in the summer of 2025? Perhaps you read something in the local news overthere or perhaps professional sources. It helps me to decide to get interrail (Black Friday?) or ordinary tickets.

By the way, I love technical details. Do not hold back if you have any about this.

TIA!

The latest news article mentions "March 2025" but who knows... https://www.francebleu.fr/infos/transports/eboulement-en-maurienne-la-reouverture-de-la-ligne-sncf-annoncee-pour-mars-2025-13-millions-d-euros-de-travaux-5809020

Actually the tunnel is fine (and they could even do maintenance works ahead!). The landslide happened further down the French Maurienne valley.

You've got a few scenic options via Nice or Switzerland. Note that the Simplon route between Domodossola and Milan is closed from 8th June-27th July and 31st August-12th September 2025.

Thank you, a lot of interesting details in the article. Good to know about the Simplon route. Probably I will end up on the Nice detour, also nice.

Sure, there's a few options. Buses will be running on Domodossola - Milan, 1h longer than the train would usually take.

(Perhaps even from Geneva/Lausanne like this year but we were only a couple people when I took it)
