You can’t guarantee a space if there are no reservations. You just board the train, and look for an empty seat. You may have to stand. You will always be able to travel, unless the train is dangerously overcrowded. This is rare.
You add the train to ‘My Trip’ on your rail pass. This doesn’t guarantee a seat or reserve the train. It gives you a ticket that’s valid on the train. You don’t need any other ticket or boarding pass for these trains.
