EC Reservations Italy-Switzerland July 2026

I am struggling to find pass holder reservations for any EC train Italy-Switzerland via this site, or RailEurope, or OBB.  All will sell me a full fare, but no pass holder reservation.

Specifically I am trying to book EC16 13:10 Milano Centrale - Zurich. on 20/07/26.  I have tried many other dates, even different months and all say (on interrail.eu) pass holder reservations may be sold out.  Is this likely, 3.5 months in advance?  (I have tried dates in May as a test, in case reservations have not opened yet, but get the same message).

I know there is a local train option with a change in Lugano and may have to rely on that, but curious to know if others see the same, and insights on what is going on?

Many thanks for your help

Something seems to be not working correctly (That train does not have a limited passholder reservation as far as i am aware, so reservations should be avalaible as longs as tickets are also available.

Raileurope shows the train double (in 1 case it says its not included and in the other it shows nonreservation requires (which is only true for the swiss section until Lugano)

There's currently a problem booking pass reservations Switzerland-Italy. Booking the mandatory section only does work, e.g. Milan to Chiasso or to Domodossola. That's also cheaper.

However, for Milan to Zurich, I'd just use the hourly regional express at xx:43 with a change in Lugano. No reservations needed and travel time is the same.

@MartenHopper

You can reserve seats from Milano to Chiasso and stay in the train until Zurich, seat reservations are not mandatory in Switzerland. It is unlikely that your seats will be reserved from Chiasso to Zurich, in this case choose other ones.

Thank you for the replies, and I’m glad to hear others are seeing a problem, too.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I want to book a similar train which goes Lucerne to Florence. The EC train leg inbetween is not bookable.

The regional train would mean waking up a hour earlier :(

Should I just wait for the issue to resolve? Anyone had a past experience with such a problem?

You can book from Chiasso to Milan on that EC. No need for reservations before that, especially not on the train from Luzern.

To confirm you mean I can sit on the train from Lugano, even though my reservation is going to be from Chiasso to Milan only?
I won’t be scrutinised by any ticket checking?
I apologise if these are stupid questions, it’s going to be my first time in Europe. Thanks

No that is totally fine. The EC can be used without reservations until Chiasso.

@Sakshi12

Note that you reserved seats from Chiasso may be occupied by other people, but you can choose any other free seats.

Please let us know the date and time of departure if you require any further assistance.

The date I’m looking at is May 25th. The train that would leave Chiasso station at 11:02 am, the EC 31.

I can see that it’s bookable on Rail Europe tho. Not on Eurail.

@Sakshi12

No problem, you can reserve seats on Rail Europe. They also add now a €2 reservation fee.

Update: I waited a couple days to see if the train becomes bookable again on Eurail. But that didn’t happen. Contacted support to see as well if they can do something, but they just insisted that it’s sold out and there is no other problem.

Anyway, decided to stop waiting and just booked from Chiasso to Milan and ahead to Florence on RailEurope with no issues!

Thanks for your help :)

@Eurail Community Moderator Could you please inform customer support that EC reservations Switzerland-Italy are currently not bookable and that "no price results” does not necessarily mean that a train is sold out?

In addition, when will these ECs be bookable again?

Hey @rvdborgt,

Thank you for tagging us on it!

We’re investigating and as soon as I get any updates, I’ll post them here.

Hello again @rvdborgt,

So, our Subject Matter Expert on reservations just informed me that currently we are still working on the issue so that prices are visible on our timetables again. Meanwhile, the troubleshooting solution would be calling SBB directly Overview | SBB help & contact.

As soon as I have more info, I’ll let you know!

Hello,

I am trying to book a seat reservation for the EC30 train from Florence (departure at 07:50) to Zurich on August 20, 2026.

I have tried through the Interrail platform, but it is not possible to reserve a seat. I also tried via ÖBB and Rail Europe, but in both cases I was unable to make a reservation.

Do you have any idea how I could proceed?

Thank you in advance.

@Tristan Vandercamere

You can just book the part with the mandatory seat reservation (Florence to Chiasso) as the train has no mandatory reservation in Switzerland.

Looks like on that train i cant find a way to get a reservation from florence not even to just Chiasso.

Looks like there might be some changes on that route on 20. August. (trainitalia does not even sell tickets for that train at the moment)

Hello,

Thank you for your help. Indeed, it seems that no part of the journey is available for reservation on any website.

I also contacted Interrail support, who suggested calling SBB (which is not free) or booking via HappyRail, but no options are available there either :

Do you think it might simply be too early to make a reservation, or could there be planned engineering works? I have not been able to find any information online regarding this.

Thank you again for your assistance !

@Tristan Vandercamere if trenitalia does not even sell tickets for that train(starting in florence) then you are not going to be able to get reservations somewhere else. (starting from milano they are already available, so maybe some construction works or maybe schedule changes are expexted between florence and milano. I dont speak italian so no idea what the actual reason is.)

You propably have to wait and see what happens to the timetable.

There will very probably be engineering works. The fact that they already published a timetable is positive. I'd expect bookings to open over the next few weeks. In any case, it's still 4 months from now so there's plenty of time.
