Hi all! This summer I will go on a trip to Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria. Most of the trip seems to go quite smooth, except the part between Budapest/Hungary and Cluj-Napoca (which, according to my own logic, would be the most logical way to enter Romania from the west). By train this takes more than 10 hours. Is there anyone here with experience in going to Romania, and perhaps knows a better route to access the country? Maybe not through Cluj at all, but another city? Thanks in advance!

Also off topic, but if you can recommend me a beautiful natural area in Romania please let me know, I’m already planning to go to the Fagaras Mountains and Danube Delta.

It’s a long way, but there’s a sleeper - the Dacia Express - which departs Vienna at 1942, or Budapest at 2310, arriving Cluj Napoca at 1044. Another portion continues to Bucharest.

There’s also the Ister, leaving Budapest a few hours earlier, but it’s not direct to Cluj and kicks you out very early in the morning

It only costs one day - the day of departure.

So you can spend all day travelling to Budapest, then board the 2310 sleeper, then stay on it until Bucharest if you want. As long as you don’t change trains after midnight, it will only use one travel day.

You can get a berth in a shared couchette on the sleeper for €13, right up to a private sleeper compartment for €100 (only if you have first class pass). You can make this reservation through Eurail, but you have to leave time for them to mail it to you, or you can just buy the reservation at Budapest station.

It's one travel day even if you stay on a train after midnight. What matters is the scheduled departure time:
