Hi everyone,

I’m currently planning my summer trip across Europe and I’ll be travelling from London to Edinburgh Waverley. I’m using a Eurail Global Pass (15 days) and wanted to confirm:

  1. Does my Eurail Global Pass cover this route?

  2. If yes, is a seat reservation mandatory, or can I just board the train using my pass?

  3. Any tips on which train service (LNER, Avanti, etc.) is best for scenery or ease of reservation?

Appreciate any guidance or experience you can share — thank you!

  1. Yes it does. It covers all regular trains in GB, except Heathrow Express.
  2. Reservations are optional and free of charge in all trains in GB, except for Eurostar and night trains. And although there's often an unreserved carriage in the long-distance trains, they can get busy, so reservations are recommended for longer journeys in those trains.
  3. LNER is probably easiest for reservation. You can book here:
    https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/make-a-reservation/
    (Use 0 as ticket number.)

In general, use this page as a guide for reservations (and ignore the Eurail website):

All covered, seat reservation recommended since it’s quite the distance. It’s free anyway, no big deal.

I prefer Avanti for the London-Scotland route, more scenic route and usually better seats on Avanti trains. Although LNER is easier and quicker to get to Edinburgh.
