Eurail pass and seat reservations

I have a purchased Eurail pass with provision for first class seating.  Do Seat Reservations need to be made through Eurail or can they be purchased thru DB, SNCF, Rail Europe, etc? If so, details please. Also, Eurail shows seating reservations are not open for 5 of my 7 legs of travel; however, Rail Europe shows seating reservations are open for all. Why the difference; is there a remedy on Eurail?

Often, the best place to buy is indeed not through Eurail, but through the operator or another third party.

The Seat61 site has the best guide to where/ how/ how much.

Eurail have artificial booking horizons for some trains. I don't know why.

@Eurail Community Moderator Can these artificial booking horizons be removed please?

@Shelby

ff you have a Plus Pass with credits for reservations, you have to book with the Eurail reservation booking system.

Hi @rvdborgt

Thanks for the examples.

The reason for these differences is that reservation availability is not always distributed to all sales channels at the same time. While carriers such as Eurostar, SNCF, and Trenitalia may have opened reservations through some distributors, the same booking horizon is not necessarily available through Eurail's reservation platform.

Our reservation system relies on inventory and availability provided through multiple partners and systems, and we maintain booking horizons based on what can be reliably offered through those channels. As a result, reservations may become available through other distributors before they appear on Eurail.

At the moment, there are unfortunately no plans to remove these limitations, as they are linked to how reservation inventory is distributed and managed between the various parties involved.

For travellers who prefer to book further in advance, using alternative booking channels such as the railway operators themselves or other distributors can be a good option.

Thanks again for sharing those examples! 😊
