Genève-Cornavin to Interlaken Ost on Oct 29 with a 1st Class Eurail Pass. Is a seat reservation required on this route via Bern? Also wondering if there’s any advantage to reserving on SBB InterCity trains

Chat GPT is not good informed. IC 8 never start in Geneva and you have no direct trains to Interlaken.

Reservations are a waste of money in Switzerland. No one, except for some tourists, make them.

No need to reserve.

But from Spiez to Interlaken, sit on the left (facing forward) absolutely an amazing view!

Between Genève and Bern, your seat will probably already be occupied by other people because no one thinks to look at the displays that indicate reserved seats. BTW sit on the right in direction of travel to see the lake after Lausanne.

If you take an ICE from Germany between Bern and Interlaken, it will probably be replaced by another train due to a delay and the seats will not be reserved.

Thank you for the replies.

From ChatGPT: On the Genève–Interlaken Ost route, you might encounter these train types:

IC1 – InterCity Genève–Bern–Zürich mainline service.

IC8 – InterCity Genève–Bern–Interlaken Ost (direct).

IR15 – InterRegio Genève–Bern–Lucerne (sometimes connects to Interlaken at Bern).

ICE – Occasional German InterCity Express sets operating via Bern.

Thank you for the reply. I should check Seat 61, DB Navigator, SBB Mobile, Then, toggle a travel day on Rail Planner and go.
