Question

How do I know I will have a seat on a train that doesn't have possibility for reservation

Hello, I going around Europe for the first time and I will be taking three trains between countries. Two of them recommended to purchase seats, so I did just to be safe. But one of them doesn’t have the option to. If I miss the train it will mess up the entire trip because we are going between different Airbnb's. How do I know that I will get a seat on the train if my spot isn’t reserved? Another question, for the reserved seats it says I may need to print the tickets. Is this true and likely? Or will I be safe with just having the ticket on my phone? Thanks!

Hi, you just need to add the train to your pass in the app and hop on the train. If there are no free seats, you can stand. Mostly local trains can't be reservated.

Please provide more information about the trains and route to give you more advice.

What does the ticket pdf you recieved say? It depends on the train company. Most of them do accept the reservation shown on your phone.

Also your shedule should not get messed up that badly by just one missed train (can always happen, but most train routes are frequent enough that it should not mess up the whole trip)

Especially on local trains it can happen that you have to stand for part of the trip if it is busy.

“How do I know I will have a seat on a train . . .” you don’t and can’t know, by definition.  No reservation = no guarantee of a seat.

However (and this is really important to understand) if no reservations are possible then you will always get on the train.  It might be busy, or it might not, but you will get on.

If you indicate what route you are concerned about then people can give more accurate advice.  As motekki indicated above, if this is a popular city-pair then there’s a good chance there will be other trains that you can take later if you somehow miss the first one.  Details of the start and end point are required though.  Remember, you won’t “not get on” the first train.  If you have a ticket/pass you are entitled to get on.

Think of it this way - you don’t end up with hundreds of people left behind in the wrong city because their unreservable train was full.  It just doesn’t happen.
