Does anyone know what this → “The Double Sleeper: Can only booked with a full fare price at the moment.” means on this page → https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/tips-and-tricks/trains-europe/night-trains/night-riviera-sleeper?  Does it mean that there is no concept of a pass holder fare for this trip any more?

I’m aware that booking this used to involve ringing GWR (no web access) and convincing them that your Johnny Foreigner credit card and address are acceptable, but it is now not even an option at all?

As it happens, the “full fare” which I can book directly online includes a super advance ticket which is only slightly more than the cost of an Interrail day, so it might be cheaper and simpler not to use my pass and just book a full ticket.  This seems a little bonkers to me.

Dear @zagmund

After checking this, it basically means that you can’t book a sleeper with a pass anymore, only full tickets are available for that train at the moment.

So even though the pass is technically valid, there’s no discounted reservation option. You’d need to buy a full ticket if you want a sleeper.

And yes, as you noticed, sometimes the full fare is similar to (or even cheaper than) using a travel day, so it can actually make more sense not to use your pass for this one and have an extra day for another route. 🙂

Let me know if you have any question.

Have a nice day!

@Camilo.

As long as a pass reservation is not available (not even at the ticket office?), I suppose GWR don't get any pass income from people using the sleeper?

Is there any path forward? Do GWR have a plan to make pass reservations available again and if so, when?

There is no such thing as a super advance ticket.

Advance tickets are the dynamic variable price fares only ever valid on the booked journey that are usually cheaper the further in advance they are bought.

Super Off-peak is the cheapest category of walk-up ticket that is the same price whenever it is bought, has no quota and is valid on any journey within the stated Super Off-peak time restrictions for that journey.

Advance fares are sold only for the seats on the sleeper train and aren’t valid for booking cabins.

The sleeper is within the time restrictions for an Super Off-peak (for London to/from stations on the sleeper route) so that is the cheapest normal ticket available that can be used to book berths/cabins.

The current price of a Super Off-Peak Paddington - Penzance is £86.70 one way or £150 return.

The berth supplement is an additional cost for all tickets and it is priced dynamically.

There is not, nor has there ever been specific passholder reservation fares/tickets for any of the GB sleepers. Supplements are available for all holders of tickets valid for travel on the sleeper trains.

Caledonian sleeper primarily sell berth inclusive fares as their main offering. They also offer berth supplements, these are for any valid ticket not just railpasses.

Night Riviera used to sell inclusive fares but stopped in 2022, now they only sell supplements.

Railpasses are valid tickets without restriction for all domestic GB trains, there is no justification for arbitrarily excluding them from the purchase of sleeper supplements where they are valid tickets for that service.

Thanks for this informarion.

@Camilo. This means the supplements exist and the information on the Interrail website is incorrect. And possibly that whoever you talked to doesn't know, or was incorrectly informed.

In any case, if passes are valid then surely GWR are obliged to offer a way to book reservations?
