This regional train cannot be booked through RENFE. It also takes a weird detour.

The route along the coast is much faster (~2h45-3h). Train times haven't been published yet but look at the current times.

EDIT: tickets/reservations on sale until 4th May as of today.

Reservations are not mandatory in this train Zaragoza-Valencia; the Eurail planner is incorrect here. But there are indeed much faster direct trains Barcelona-Valencia. There's also 1 direct regional train without reservations.

thanks for your answer. Which locations should i be placing into the search bar to find the coast route you mentioned?

It doesn't matter (Valencia Jq. Sorolla is the main station for high speed trains)

Just have a look on the timetables for next week, e.g. on bahn.com. Times won't change that much.

Renfe is known to be late in releasing tickets. It could be possible that they start selling tickets less than one month before your travel date.

It's usually a MD with assigned seating so reservations are compulsory. Due to engineering works buses replace the trains on the Zaragoza-Teruel-Valencia line until November, so I would avoid it.

MD trains in Catalonia (often?) don't have mandatory reservations.

In any case, Renfe didn't include mandatory reservations in their MERITS data for this train, so they shouldn't be surprised about passengers without reservations.

Zaragoza-Teruel-Valencia doesn't touch Catalonia so I'm pretty sure it requires reservations.

Though yes with the little "bus replacement" notice on the RENFE website I'd avoid the route in the first place.

I know, but that was just to illustrate that MD does not automatically mean mandatory reservations.

Maybe Renfe's data are incorrect for these trains, but they seem to be consistent with it.

As far as I know the only way to know whether this train requires a reservation is either from Renfe directly or by relying on the rail planner app. Renfe sold me a €4 reservation for this route 3 years ago, and it makes sense to me that all MD's that have assigned seats have compulsory reservations.

MD trains in Catalonia don't have assigned seats, as far as I know (they're all free seating) and neither do the regional express trains that cross into Aragón and the region of Valencia.

I expect Renfe staff to say you need a reservation regardless (they often claim that for the RE trains too) and the Rail planner app can't be relied on anyway, see MD Portbou-Barcelona...
