Question

Only 1 credit left for the return

Hi!

Quick question about my Interrail pass.

I have a 5-day Global Pass and only 1 travel day left. I’m trying to get from Budapest to Paris (and after Tours, France) on August 15th with a night train.

The route I found is:
Budapest → Ulm Hbf (on August 16th : night train) → Paris

But Interrail says I need 2 travel days for this, which I don’t have.

Is there a way to make this work with only 1 travel day?
Or should I book part of the trip separately?

Thanks a lot!

Which night train would you be using on the Augsburg- Paris route?

The time you board a train is what counts for a travel day. If you switch trains after midnight, that’s what uses a second day.

One route that could work in a single travel day is Budapest-Berlin during the day (leaving very early, at 0530), then jump on the European Sleeper to Paris. (It only goes 3x a week). You’d have to buy a separate ticket from Paris to Tours.

It’s actually possible, on a week day, to leave Budapest at 0530 and reach Paris in time for the final TGV to Tours, but on a weekend, you can only get as far as Paris

I made a mistake; the night train I originally planned was from Budapest to Ulm Hbf on August 15th at 8:55 pm. It arrives on the 16th at 7:37 am. I was considering taking a direct train to Paris from Ulm right after.
What’s the best thing to do according to you ?

Otherwise, if I want to keep this itinerary, where can I book tickets separately (for the Ulm-Paris Est and then Paris-Tours) ? How much do you think it will cost me if I book it now ?

That will use two days, because you’re boarding a train from Ulm on Day 2.

You can stick with that sleeper, and buy a ticket from Ulm.

Probably the best option if you want too reduce costs, is to take day trains all the way to Paris, leaving Budapest at 0730, and change at Munich & Stuttgart, but you won’t reach Tours. You'll have to buy a ticket for Paris-Tours.

Option 2 is to leave on Friday. Then you can reach Paris in time for a train to Tours.

You can check prices for Ulm-Paris & Paris-Tours on sncf-connect.com

Bear in mind that your sleeper train continues to Stuttgart, so you might want to pickup a connection from there to Paris.

You should also check the cost of your sleeper from Budapest on https://jegy.mav.hu in case it's cheaper to purchase that one, and use your pass for Day 2.

i kind of expect the sleeper to be the cheaper one to book separatly (47€ for seat and 70€ for couchette) but those are mot fixed prices
