Hi

Some of you may have seen a post ref from me - unable to book night train. This has now been resolved thanks to response from this community.

BrendanDB - gave a very good insight in terms of day and night journey.

Which has now got me thinking , in terms of if I should do this during day or night now.

As it stands our plan and thought process is as per :

  1. Night train - 8th May - Oslo to Bergen
  2. stay 1 night in Bergen
  3. Return leg - Bergen to Mydral - During DAY time
  4. ) Mydral to Flam - day time
  5. Depending on how train times works out . Either stay for 1 night in Flam or catch a return train from Flam to Mydral and from there back to Oslo ( ideally during day time)

Just wish to ask the community your thoughts on  this ?

Our thoughts - Night journey  1 way and do day journey on the return leg

Are the view any different/better from Bergen to Oslo, as oppose from Oslo to Bergen

I’lld go for some extra days in Bergen. One day is not enough if you want to properly visit it.
The Flåmsbana can be done from as a day trip from Bergen, with the “Norway in a Nutshell”-tour. That way you get to see the Nærøyfjorden as well, from a boat.

The Flåmsbana itself is quite short, 50 minutes or so, so very good easily done as a slight detour between Bergen -Oslo. Flåm is very, very smal and hyper touristic, wouldn’t really recommend staying there. So do it as a day trip from Bergen, or as a break on your Bergen-Oslo trip.

The sights are the same from whatever direction.

Bergen-Voss, best views on the left in the direction of the traffic (right when coming from Oslo).

Voss-Oslo: best views on the right in the direction of the traffic (left when coming from Oslo).

There’s also a café car of course, so you can check the views out on the other side.

I didn’t travel this line yet, but I would say the view is mostly dependant on which side of the train you sit, and also which direction you face, the time of the day and the weather. So it seems sensible to me to take the nigh train one way to save time as you do the route during the day the other way.
