Hi,

We have a train between Rome and Ancona and we aren’t obligated to book the train

what is the process in the train station when it’s not obligated to book the journey? 
we have to show the QR code ?

Yes you show the QR-code (your ticket) to staff at the ticket barriers in Rome. Often you can simply board the train and show the app whenever asked by someone.

If you don't have a reservation, then you choose a coach and seat yourself, just like in a French TER.
