I don't seem to be able to reserve seats. The app is buffering forever . 

Or at one point there was a reservation in the basket/cart but then a message appeared that I could no longer buy it, the offer had expired

The Interrail website is the last website you should use for reservations. Instead, use this page as a guide:

https://www.seat61.com/interrail-and-eurail-reservations.htm

It's often cheaper to book elsewhere, you can sometimes pick a seat and you don't get to suffer Interrail's technical issues.

If it doesn't work for you, then please mention route, date and departure time, so people can check.
